Daryl Howard

  

Assistant Chief of Police Daryl N. Howard is a native of Chesapeake, Virginia and is 1988 graduate of Indian River High School. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA before continuing his education at Virginia State University, Petersburg, Virginia where he received his Bachelor of Sociology with a minor in Administration of Justice, graduating Cum Laude in 1994. Chief Howard is currently in the Master’s Program at Saint Leo University majoring in Criminology. 


ACOP Howard began his career in law enforcement in 1998 with the Department of Corrections. In 2000, he left the Department of Corrections to begin his career in policing with Norfolk Police Department. As a patrolman, Howard most memorable time was being assigned to the Motorcycle Unit. He is a two-time reciprocal of Officer of the Quarter, and was awarded the Medal of Valor for his courageous actions. Chief Howard quickly excelled though the ranks, by achieving the rank of Sergeant in 2008, Lieutenant in 2012, Captain in 2015, and Assistant Chief of Police in 2017. ACOP Howard has led numerous departments/sections, committees, and panels with integrity, compassion, fairness, and respect for his fellow officers, and the citizens of Norfolk, Virginia.  During his career he served as the Downtown Sector Commander of the First Patrol Division, Executive Officer of the Training Division, Detective Division, Commanding Officer of the First Patrol Division, Assistant Chief, Field Operations Bureau, and he is currently the Assistant Chief, Administrative Services Bureau where is he has assumed the position as the Trustee for the Norfolk Employees Retirement System and he was appointed to the Governor’s Council on Public Safety.


Through of his accomplishments he is most thankful for being a devoted father to his three children ages 27, 15, and 13. During his spare time you can catch ACOP Howard enjoying an array of actives, attending baseball games, traveling, attending outdoor concerts, and dining at some of local restaurants in Hampton Roads.
